Enhancing Assessment Quality and Fairness
The English Language Teaching (ELT) Department is committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of academic practice. In line with this commitment, we are pleased to announce the successful completion of a productive workshop focused on Exam Paper Evaluation.
Held on November 28, 2025, the session brought together faculty members to engage in a detailed and critical assessment of recent examination papers.
Workshop Objectives
The primary goal of this focused workshop was to conduct a thorough analysis of current examination practices, specifically aiming to:
| Objective | Focus |
|---|---|
| Identify Strengths | Pinpoint effective elements within exam papers that successfully measure student learning outcomes and cognitive abilities |
| Determine Areas for Improvement | Critically assess aspects that may be ambiguous, poorly structured, or not adequately testing intended material |
| Ensure Fairness and Reliability | Review evaluation criteria and marking schemes to confirm consistency, fairness, and reliability across all markers and courses |
| Share Best Practices | Facilitate open discussion among faculty to share successful strategies for question design, assessment layout, and rubric development |
Key Outcomes
The candid discussion and collaborative evaluation led to several important insights regarding:
-
Clarity of current assessment tools
-
Scope of exam content coverage
-
Alignment between assessments and learning objectives
The workshop provided a clearer understanding of:
-
Strengths to maintain in current exam practices
-
Weaknesses to address in future assessments
Next Steps
The feedback generated during this workshop will be instrumental in revising future examination procedures, ensuring that assessments are:
-
Robust and well-structured
-
Fair to all students
-
Reflective of material taught and skills required
The ELT Department will now implement the feedback by:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| 1. Developing Revised Guidelines | Creating updated, clearer guidelines for question paper submission and review |
| 2. Integrating Best Practices | Incorporating successful question formats and evaluation methods identified in the workshop into future assessments |
Acknowledgment
We thank all participating faculty for their dedication and valuable contributions to this essential initiative. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this continuous quality improvement effort on our student assessments.
