Faculty of Education Celebrate International Women’s Day

The Faculty of Education at Tishk International University celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th 2022. Staff members and students in the Biology, Computer, ELT, Physics and Mathematics Education Departments held a joint celebration, and many participated in presenting on topics related to this special day.  A fourth stage Biology Education student presented on Marie Curie,  a scientist remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to finding treatments for cancer. This celebration aimed to recognize the achievements of women, and highlight the importance of their contributions across the world.

In the beginning of the event, the Dean of Faculty Dr. Suleyman Celik, delivered a speech on the role that women play in society, emphasizing of women empowerment and gender equality. Mrs. Sawsan Hamed, Lecturer at the Biology Education Department also presented on the hero women in our lives.

Each Department of the Faculty of Education presented respectively on prominent female figures:

The ELT Department – Mother Teresa

Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century’s greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016. During her lifetime Mother Teresa became famous as the Catholic nun who dedicated her life to caring for the destitute and dying in the slums of Calcutta – now known as Kolkata.

Computer Education Department – Frances Elizabeth Allen

Frances Elizabeth Allen was an American computer scientist and pioneer in the field of optimizing compilers. Allen was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow and in 2006 became the first woman to win the Turing Award. Her achievements include seminal work in compilers, program optimization, and parallelization.

Physics Education Department – Al Astrolab:

Mariam Astrulabi was a Muslim scientist born in Syria during the 10th century. In fact, she is known to be the only female astronomer in ancient Islam. Mariam is known for developing Astrolabes, an ancient astronomical computer for solving problems relating to time and position of the sun and stars.

Mathematics Education – Sophy German

Sophie Scholl (May 9, 1921–February 22, 1943) was a German college student who, along with her brother Hans, was convicted of treason and executed for distributing propaganda for the White Rose anti-Nazi passive resistance group during World War II. For her actions, she was executed by guillotine. Since the 1970s, Scholl has been extensively commemorated for her anti-Nazi resistance work

Biology Education – Marie Curie

Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity

In between the presentations, Assistant Lecturer Dr. Zaynab Yalmaz, Director of Social Affairs and Auidance and Dr. Aziza Kavlu, Lecturer at Mathematics Education Department, delivered speeches on International Women’s Day and why it is important to commemorate this day. They also discussed women empowerment, and how society has developed to support women’s rights. The celebration was wrapped up with a range of snacks and drinks.

It’s a day where women are recognized and celebrated in their fields. These women have a fierce and robust spirit, which makes them excel in their respective areas. They deserve all the love and support that the world gives them on this day. The contribution of women in every sphere of life is massive.
