6th International Workshop on Nanotechnology

On December 22nd, 2022, the Department of Physics Education, Faculty of Education at Tishk International University held the 6th International Workshop on Nanotechnology, themed: A Sustainable Development in Energy and Construction in Kurdistan-Iraq. The workshop was held in two parts:

Session 1: Keynote speeches

Session 2: Panel Discussion

The workshop started with a welcoming speech by Dr. Fatih Cura, the Vice President of TIU, and Dr. Orhan Tug, on behalf of the Dean of the Education Faculty at TIU. The opening speech was delivered by Dr. Pshtiwan Akrem, Head of the Physics Education Department of TIU, and Mr. Sivar Aziz Baiz, who presented the statistical data for the keyword of “nano” at Web of Science and Scopus to show the number of publications per author in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. After that, the keynote speeches were presented, and each keynote speech took about 20–30 minutes. There were six keynote speeches with trendy and hot topics about nanoscience and nanotechnology. A question-and-answer session followed each speech. During the second part, a panel discussion entitled Pathways to the Establishment and Sustainability of a Nanotechnology Association in Kurdistan-Iraq was held.

The workshop was performed successfully with the help of distinguished keynote speakers, session chairs, poster presenters, panel moderator, panellists, attendants, registrars, internet and online managers, and the hosting of Tishk International University staff. The Organizing Committee thanks all presenters, participants and Tishk International University.

The short program was as below:

1st Part:

The first part had two sessions. The first session started with a speech by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan, Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Darussalam. He gave a keynote speech on Green Chemistry: Its Potential in Modern Chemistry, Society, and Industry; Band Gap Engineering of Semiconductors using Green Chemistry, Nanobiotechnology. The second keynote speaker was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azeez A. Barzinjy from Soran University and TIU, joined by Banaz Shahab Haji, from Salahaddin University-Erbil, Iraq, to talk about Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extract and eutectic-based ionic liquid: thin film application and activation energy of conduction. This was followed by a tea break where participants had a chance to further discuss the topics and communicate.

The second session started with the keynote speech of Prof. Dr. Samir Mustafa Hamad and Peyman Khalid, Soran Research Center, Soran University, Erbil-Iraq. The title of the talk was Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc Oxide Nanorods using Green Method. After that, the next keynote speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Salih Mohammed and Nzar Shakir Pero, from the American University in Sulaimani, Sulaimani University, Sulaimani-Iraq and Soran University, Erbil- Iraq, delivered their speeches titled Green Synthesis of Fe NPs and their Role in enhancing the mechanical and sensitivity properties of cement-based concrete.

The next keynote speakers were Shelan Muhammed Mustafa, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azeez A. Barzinjy and Assist. Prof. Dr. Abubakr Hassan, Erbil Polytechnique University, Erbil-Iraq; Soran University, and TIU, Erbil – Iraq, the title of the talk was Sustainable Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles using Deep Eutectic Solvents for Increasing Silicon Solar Cell Efficiency.

The last keynote speech was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Salih Mohammed and Chiya Y. Rahimzadeh, from the American University in Sulaimani, Sulaimani University, Sulaimani-Iraq and Soran University, Erbil-Iraq. The title of the talk was Enhancing the Weight Loss, Heat Flow, and Compression Stress-Strain Behavior of Construction Materials using NanoSilica.

2nd Part:

A panel discussion titled Pathways to the Establishment and Sustainability of a Nanotechnology Association in Kurdistan-Iraq was held during the second part of the workshop, under the monitoring of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Salih Mohammed from the American University in Sulaimani, Sulaimani University, Sulaimani-Iraq.

The organizing committee chose this topic because the number of nanotechnologists and their publications is increasing. Therefore, this is the right time to open discussions on establishing a Nanotechnology Association in Kurdistan-Iraq. This Association will help the nanotechnologists to know each other, collaborate, and conduct workshops, seminars, and conferences.

The participant panellists in this discussion were Prof. Dr. Salah Raza, former President of Charmo University and a Professor at Sulaimani University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khidhr R. Khidhr, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at American University in Duhok, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azeez A. Barzinjy from Soran University and TIU. Each speaker discussed the topic for ten minutes, and a question-and-answer session was held.

Also, some posters were presented in the workshop. Researchers, individually or in a group, participated in the workshop by presenting their studies with posters from Tishk International University.

The workshop was performed successfully with the help of our distinguished keynote speakers, session chairs, poster presenters, panel moderator, panellists, attendants, registrars, and staff of the Tishk International University. The workshop keynote speeches were also streamlined online via the Zoom platform so that people from other cities and countries could participate. It was observed that there was a great interest in the keynote speeches, although they contained high-level nanoscience concepts. The audience who participated face-to-face and online showed great enthusiasm to follow the presentations with their questions.

The workshop was held from 9:00 to 16:00, and a camera in the hall for live streaming was present for the online participants. A total of 451 participants from various countries joined the workshop.
