Identity from a Linguistic and Sociological Perspective: A Thought-Provoking Workshop
On Wednesday 18 December 2024, the Department of Mathematics Education at the Faculty of Education of the Tishk International University hosted an engaging and insightful workshop titled “Identity from a Linguistic and Sociological Perspective.” This event brought together scholars, students, and professionals to explore the multifaceted relationship between language, culture, and social structures in shaping individual and collective identities.
The workshop featured distinguished speakers from the fields of linguistics and sociology, each offering unique perspectives on how language acts as a powerful tool in constructing, negotiating, and expressing identity. The workshop started with the presentation of Dr. Suzan Sabri and later followed by the presentation of mister Minwas Jamal Rasheed. The ddiscussion delved into topics such as:
- Language as a Marker of Identity: Understanding how dialects, accents, and code-switching reflect cultural and social affiliations.
- The Role of Discourse in Shaping Social Identities: Examining how narratives and communication styles influence perceptions of self and others.
- Intersectionality and Identity Formation: Analyzing how race, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status intersect to shape linguistic practices and identity.
Participants also engaged in interactive sessions, including collaborative group discussions, which offered hands-on opportunities to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.
After the presentation, an attendee said the followings; “This workshop has been an eye-opening experience,” (Fatima, student). In the end, the head of department of Mathematics Education said; “It has not only deepened our understanding of identity but also emphasized the importance of inclusivity and respect for diverse linguistic and cultural expressions.”
The event concluded with a call for a dialogue on the subject, emphasizing the significance of bridging linguistic and sociological perspectives in understanding contemporary issues related to identity.
