The ELT Department of the Faculty of Education at Tishk International University organized a Reading Workshop, held on October 27th, 2021. The aim of the workshop was to help students improve their English reading skills. The workshop was designed to offer a challenging environment to enhance students’ literacy in English, and engage them in reading and comprehension activities. The program incorporates demonstration, guided and individual practice, as well as group learning to support student development. It is composed of several components that work together to teach students skills and strategies that will help them develop and grow as readers.
The workshop was arranged by Mr. Karwan Kareem, Mr. Soran Kurdy, Ms. Kanar Zirak, and Ms. Eivar Luqman, and included the following sessions:
- 1st session: Types of reading (intensive and close)
- 2nd session: Reading a short story twice, doing an intensive and close reading.
- 3rd session: based on what they read, they were asked to write a short story in one paragraph.
The workshop was presented by Assist. Lecturer. Karwan Karim (TIU/Faculty of Education-ELT Department). It was attended by 12 second-stage students and 3 assistant lecturers of the ELT department at TIU. The workshop enabled students to develop skills in reading text in two different ways and helped the students understand how everyday reading differs from artful reading.
