Scientific Trip to Zheen International Hospital Laboratory
The Biology Education Department, Faculty of Education at Tishk International University, organized a scientific trip to Zheen International Hospital Genetics Department Laboratory for 3rd-grade students on May 16th, 2022. The trip was supervised by Mr Harmand A. Hama and Mr Zanyar Othman.
The trip aimed to provide students with an opportunity to understand the tests conducted in the laboratory, including tests to identify chromosome abnormalities such as aneuploidy and rearrangements. Other tests detect the presence of inherited gene mutations and can confirm a suspected disease diagnosis, determine an individual’s carrier state, or predict future disease.
The trip supervisors provided students with guides to support them during the trip. The lab technician and genetic expert from Zheen International Hospital Genetics Laboratory hosted and guided the group of staff and students. They explained the process of genetic tests, starting from DNA or RNA extraction until the sequencing and karyotyping, based on the test the physicians require. The genetic expert also explained the different techniques and machines in genetic and molecular labs. The types of genetic, molecular, viral, and genomic polymorphism tests were also discussed. Our staff and students greatly benefitted from the visit and appreciated the fruitful and detailed explanations provided by the genetic lab expert. At the end of the visit, the supervisors gave an assignment to the students regarding the trip.
The trip was successful, and students had an opportunity to understand the procedures and process of genetic tests in laboratories and the importance of these tests in various scientific fields.
