On May 5th, 2025, the Biology Education Department at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an insightful scientific trip for its third-grade students to the Exo Gene Laboratory at Zheen International Hospital. Supervised by Mr. Harmand A. Hama and Mr. Raman A. Mohammed, the visit was designed to provide students with crucial hands-on exposure to the real-world practices of genetic testing and diagnostics.

The trip offered a valuable opportunity for students to observe the professional procedures used for detecting chromosome abnormalities such as aneuploidy and chromosomal rearrangements, as well as inherited gene mutations. These tests are essential for confirming disease diagnoses, determining carrier status, and predicting the likelihood of future genetic conditions.

A Journey Through the Genetic Testing Process

The students were warmly welcomed by the staff and genetic specialists at Exo Gene Lab, who provided detailed explanations of the entire laboratory workflow and the cutting-edge technologies utilized in genetic analysis. Students were guided through each major phase of genetic testing:

  • Pre-analytical Stage: Students learned about the critical first step, where patient samples like blood or saliva are collected, labeled, and meticulously prepared.
  • Extraction Phase: This stage demonstrated how DNA or RNA is isolated from the prepared samples using specialized techniques.
  • Amplification and Preparation: The students observed the process of amplifying the genetic material through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and preparing it for advanced procedures like sequencing and karyotyping, depending on the specific test required.
  • Analytical Stage: This phase showcased the use of modern machines to detect mutations or chromosomal changes with high precision.
  • Post-analytical Phase: Finally, the lab staff explained how test results are carefully analyzed, interpreted, and compiled into comprehensive medical reports that assist doctors in making accurate diagnoses.

The students were particularly engaged during the demonstrations of molecular, viral, and genomic polymorphism tests, appreciating the opportunity to interact with professional laboratory instruments and specialists.

This highly educational trip left a strong impression on the students, reinforcing the importance of genetic testing in modern healthcare and scientific research. To consolidate their learning, the supervisors assigned a reflection task, encouraging students to summarize their observations and connect them to their course material.

The department extends its sincere gratitude to Exo Gene Lab and Zheen International Hospital for their exceptional hospitality and the invaluable insights they provided. The visit was a great success, offering students an enriching experience and a deeper understanding of how genetics plays a crucial role in modern biology.
