The ELT department held a poster presentation event on the 30th May 2016 which involved 3r and 4th year students: Internet Linguistics. The event was organized by Dr. Ashraf R. Abdullah. Students were asked to prepare and talk about posters relevant to the aforementioned subjects. With regards to Internet Linguistics, Dr. Ashraf’s students ventured into the virtual world Second Life and built a corpus of data through systematic participant observation. They went on to empirically observe this data and perform linguistic analysis based on what interesting features came up in the language of their corpus. Linguistics topics included speech acts, politeness, word-formation, acronyms and use of emojis to mention merely a few. The posters reflected their research and all had methodology and analysis sections. They were competent in their presentations and impressed visitors with their work who had mostly never heard of Second Life or virtual worlds for that matter.
