The Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Education at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a community service project. The project aimed to improve students’ English Language levels in public schools, develop students’ teaching skills, and form a productive connection between schools and universities.

The steps of the project were as follows:

Step One: On November 8, 2021, a group of ELT/ TIU students visited the school to conduct an analysis of the institution and its students.

Step Two: On December 7, 2021, the students cooperated with the school administration to direct the project.

Step Three: On December 8, 2021, needs analysis of the school and teaching sessions were arranged.

Step Four: On March 14, 2022, teaching at the school and meetings with school staff occurred. Additionally, 3rd grade students of the ELT department prepared a curriculum to teach the basics of the English Language to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade primary school students.

The project was organized under the supervision of Assist. Lecturer Ms. Fatimah Saadi Ali (TIU- Education Faculty- ELT Department), assisted by Ako Khdir and Lavan Dlawar (ELT 3rd grade students).

The project’s 20 volunteers comprised of TIU staff members and 3rd grade students. The project enabled students to serve the community, engage in extracurricular activities, apply their knowledge, and exercise teaching skills.

In brief, the public school was pleased with the project and the assistance staff members and students provided. They requested further visits and projects that helped young learners develop language skills. Thus, this experience encourages the ELT Department to organize more community service projects to serve and help improve the educational sector.
