Refugee Camp Teaching Project (Community Service Project)

Refugee children, more than any other, require outstanding educators who can serve as role models, mentors, motivators, protectors, and champions. There would be no schools if it weren’t for their commitment and determination.

Teaching at the Syrian refugee camp, it is an ongoing project since 2015. It has been two years that we couldn’t visit the refugee camps; because of the health and safety regulations of the Covid-19 pandemic, we couldn’t continue to serve in the camps.

Step One: After getting annual acceptance from the general directory of Erbil education to start our project in the refugee camp, we, as ELT staff and volunteers, were very excited to get back to servicing the refugees in the Darashakran refugee camp students.

Step Two – Our first visit was on February 22, 2022, to the camp management and both primary schools of Darashakran refugee camp.

Step Three: In this regard, the Refugee Camps Volunteering Project was finally activated on Monday, February 28, 2022. As part of this project, our volunteer preservice teachers from the ELT Department, Faculty of Education at Tishk International University have started teaching in Darashakran Refugee Camp Primary School.

Step Four – We served the learners and the school community by teaching them English twice a week (Monday and Tuesday) and for two hours each day. The project will continue till the end of the academic year of April 2022. Additionally, the camp administration and school staff warmly welcomed our volunteers and assured their full support for the team throughout this project.
