TIU Joins Cultural Heritage Digitalization Project in Germany

UNESCO World Heritage Preservation Initiative

Tishk International University is participating in the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage (DoCH) Project Week, organized by Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the German UNESCO Commission. This innovative project focuses on digitally documenting and preserving the Al-Chibayish Marshes, a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Iraq, using advanced digital preservation technologies.

Advanced Digital Documentation Methods

The project employs cutting-edge techniques to capture vulnerable cultural and ecological elements:

Digital Preservation Technologies:

  • 3D scanning of waterways and archaeological sites

  • Photogrammetry for detailed spatial documentation

  • Multispectral drone mapping for comprehensive area coverage

  • Community-based documentation of intangible cultural practices

Preservation Focus Areas:

  • Reed-built architecture and traditional structures

  • Endemic biodiversity and sacred water buffalo herds

  • Traditional boat-building techniques and craftsmanship

  • Oral poetry and cultural narratives

  • Ancient water management systems developed over 5,000 years

Educational Components and Certification

Students will engage in comprehensive learning experiences:

  • Team-based projects digitizing tangible and intangible heritage

  • Technical courses in photogrammetry, 3D modeling, and web development

  • Scientific research methodologies for cultural preservation

  • ECTS credit opportunity – up to 6 points upon successful completion

  • Certificate of participation acknowledging project involvement

Project Timeline and Locations

Germany Project Week (November 19-25, 2025):

  • Workshops and hands-on training in photogrammetry and LiDAR scanning

  • Guided cultural and technical tours in Brandenburg and Berlin regions

Southern Iraq Project Week (December 12-19, 2025):

  • Fieldwork within the Al-Chibayish Marshes
