The annual TIU national workshop on Teaching and Learning of Mathematics will be held on 25 October 2023. This year\u2019s running theme is Assessment Strategies for Fostering Deep Mathematical Understanding at the University Level. The workshop serves as a crucial platform for educators, mathematicians, and researchers to delve into the vital intersection of assessment and pedagogy within higher education mathematics. By exploring innovative assessment strategies, cultivating effective feedback mechanisms by promoting inclusivity and diversity, fostering collaborative assessment communities that examine ethical considerations while promoting holistic assessment integration, we aim to empower participants with the tools to nurture profound mathematical comprehension and critical thinking among university-level students and teachers. Join us in this collaborative endeavor to reinvigorate the assessment landscape in mathematics education.<\/p>\n

  1. To explore cutting-edge assessment approaches and promote holistic assessment integration. This workshop is dedicated to showcasing and dissecting contemporary assessment strategies that transcend traditional testing paradigms especially in integrating assessment practices within the broader pedagogical framework, with a keen interest in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Attendees will have the opportunity to delve into formative and summative assessment techniques, digital assessment tools, and alternative methods that encourage deep mathematical understanding.<\/li>\n
  2. To promote inclusivity and diversity in assessment. In recognizing the importance of inclusivity and diversity in today’s educational landscape, this workshop will emphasize the development of assessment strategies that cater to a wide range of learners. Participants will explore ways to design assessments that accommodate various learning styles, backgrounds, and abilities, ensuring that mathematical education is accessible and engaging for all students.<\/li>\n
  3. Examine ethical considerations in assessment and foster collaborative assessment communities: Ethical considerations in assessment are vital in maintaining the integrity of mathematical education, and this can be achieved and maintained by building a supportive community of educators and researchers. This workshop aims to guide participants in understanding and addressing ethical challenges related to assessment, such as plagiarism, cheating, and bias. Attendees, through sharing of ideas, experiences, and best practices in assessment, will learn how to implement fairness and academic integrity in their assessment practices while upholding the highest standards of ethics.<\/li>\n
  4. To cultivate effective feedback mechanisms. Effective feedback is pivotal in the learning process. We aspire to equip participants with insights and practical skills to provide constructive and timely feedback that fosters mathematical growth. Through interactive sessions and case studies, attendees will gain the expertise to implement robust feedback mechanisms in their own teaching practices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Post Workshop Report:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          The Mathematics Education department at Tishk International University organized the annual National Workshop on Teaching and Learning of Mathematics on 25 October 2023. The workshop was attended by the vice president for academic affairs Asst. Dr. Mehmet Ozdemir, the dean of the faculty of Education Dr. Dogan Ozdemir, the vice dean of the faculty of science at Salahadin university Karzan Ahmed Berdawood, heads of departments, lecturers from various universities, and students.<\/p>\n

          The running theme was Assessment Strategies for Fostering Deep Mathematical Understanding at the University Level. The workshop serves as a crucial platform for educators, mathematicians, and researchers to delve into the vital intersection of assessment and pedagogy within higher education mathematics. The objectives of the workshop were, firstly, to explore cutting-edge assessment approaches and promote holistic assessment integration. This objective was particularly geared towards the integration of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) into the assessment.<\/p>\n

          Attendees had the opportunity to delve into formative and summative assessment techniques, digital assessment tools, and alternative methods that encourage deep mathematical understanding. The objective was ably and efficiently covered Ms. Rasha Alkabbanie. Secondly, to promote inclusivity and diversity in assessment.<\/p>\n

          In recognizing the importance of inclusivity and diversity in today’s educational landscape, the workshop emphasized the development of assessment strategies that cater to a wide range of learners. Participants, as guided by Dr. Venera Ulker, explored ways to design assessments that accommodate various learning styles, backgrounds, and abilities, ensuring that mathematical education is accessible and engaging for all students. Thirdly, to examine ethical considerations in assessment and foster collaborative assessment communities. Ethical considerations in assessment are vital in maintaining the integrity of mathematical education, and this can be achieved and maintained by building a supportive community of educators and researchers.<\/p>\n

          Asst. Prof. Dr. Aziza Kavlu guided participants in understanding and addressing ethical challenges related to assessment, such as plagiarism, cheating, and bias. Attendees, through sharing of ideas, experiences, and best practices in assessment, learned how to implement fairness and academic integrity in their assessment practices while upholding the highest standards of ethics. Lastly, to cultivate effective feedback mechanisms. Effective feedback is pivotal in the learning process.<\/p>\n

          A panel session moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulnasir Isah discussed practical skills useful for providing constructive and timely feedback that fosters mathematical growth. The closing remarks including a vote of thanks was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Salisu Ibrahim on behalf of the head of department.<\/p>\n
