The purpose of the event was to enhance a new collaboration between Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia. A year later, the second ICOWOBAS was held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 3-4 June 2009, jointly with the Regional Annual Fundamental Science Seminar (RAFSS 2009). In 2017, the conference was held at Salahaddin University (Kurdistan, Iraq) to enrich the collaboration between UTM, UNAIR, and Salahaddin University.
